off the grid and out to sea

It’s been a long month of April and an even longer two weeks past. I’m winding down from a great experience at CiL and an intense week of follow-up with my laptop, Jenn, strategic planning, and an optimistic outlook for “2.0@SPL.” I’ve been looking forward to a vacation and it finally starts tomorrow. I’ll be the one out there on the open sea reading Jodi Picoult in the sun. Just look for the tie-dyed Rolling Stones t-shirt somewhere near the pool… that will be me.

Til next week…

strategically planned

Jenn and I made it through today’s strategic planning meeting with no crashed laptops, interrupted wireless connections, or spilled drinks (although some of my pasta ended up on the table). Jenn did a great job describing the point and purpose of 2.0 technology and its applications in libraries. She dropped a few names, shared highlights from the CiL sessions, and demo’d the Hennepin County Library “comments in the catalog” feature. We were all wowed by the number of patron comments that are already posted about Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. We’re hoping to soon crank up our installation of III’s WebPAC Pro module, which will make our catalog just as fun and exciting for our users.

Then it was my turn. My brain is nowhere near as organized as Jenn’s and I’m a very visual thinker. I need to use a lot of words to “draw my thoughts.” And so I did, adding a few more names and session highlights to the mix. Then we closed the curtains and debuted the community toolbar that Jenn and I put together before we left DC. The director asked how quickly I could get the toolbar ready for the public. I told her I could have it ready for external use by tomorrow, but that I really need to get my laundry done so that I can leave for vacation on Sunday. One person offered to do my laundry and another said she’d be willing to take my vacation for me. How’s that for teamwork and 2.0 enthusiasm?!

Our excitement just might be catching on. Stay tuned.

re-entry

My brain is so jammed with stuff that I’m having a hard time getting it all out and onto the keyboard. I’ve been working on my CiL conference report and I’m ‘whelmed by all there is to summarize, highlight, propose, and… well… get excited about! Jenn and I have caught up where and when we can to share the contents of our heads, chat about all we want to do, plan lunch at Pita Inn, figure out the best way to get our director on board the L2 dreamboat, and revel in our enthusiasm for all things 2.0.

We’ve been asked to talk about our CiL adventure at tomorrow’s strategic planning meeting. Actually, we were asked by email and then confirmed in a memo before either of has had a chance to reply to the email! I haven’t even been able to write the first paragraph of my summary… how the heck am I going to talk to that group? My junior high school principal is on that committee (he’s the president of our Board of Trustees). Talk about performance anxiety!

I suppose I should get started. But first I’ll check the email, gmail, workmail, voicemail, calendar, weather, horoscope, daily dharma, feeds, facebook, ichat, twitter, and make sure my ipod is charged for the day. Y’all have a good one!
